Richard Vill est un créateur de mode vivant au Tyrol, versant sud. Travaillant principalement la fibre de lin, depuis le début de son activité il porte la plus grande attention aux savoir-faire de l’artisanat. Ce livre, fruit de longues recherches, est un voyage passionnant dans l’histoire du lin et de son impact sur l’histoire du vêtement. « En restant très attentifs à l’Histoire, nous avons observé et recueilli de façon très précise toutes les influences, les courants de changements, d’un point de vue social, politique ou encore économique, qui ont affecté la façon de vivre des populations au fil des temps ».

Récemment paru, « Leinen: Inspiration & Faszination » est un ouvrage relativement exhaustif sur les fibres lin et chanvre. Extrêmement bien documenté, très largement illustré de photos souvent inédites, il retrace la culture de ces fibres depuis l’âge néolithique jusqu’à la mode d’aujourd’hui. On y croise des fragments rares de vêtements de l’Egypte ancienne (Ph. 2 à 4), des kouros grecs, jusqu’au suaire de Turin.

Ou encore des extraits du “Liber Linteus Zagrabiensis » (manuscrit sur toile de lin, servant de bandelettes enveloppant une momie trouvée en Égypte – Ph.5) et du “Tabula Peutingeriana » (carte des étapes de Castorius, copie du XIIIe siècle d’une ancienne carte romaine où figurent les routes et les villes principales de l’Empire romain). Y sont également détaillée les caractéristiques de la plante, son cheminement vers l’Europe et les étapes de sa culture par l’homme, au travers des différentes innovations technologiques.

Richard Vill, fashion designer from South Tyrol-Italy, is working mainly with Linen fibre and since the beginning of his professional career has given a significant mark to the textile craftsmanship, enhancing its added value. His research is a journey through the history of linen and fashion; “with an attentive eye for the history we gather precise and characterized influences in regard to the social, political and economic changes, which affect the way of being and lifestyle”. He has published an extensive book about linen and hemp. The documentation of the author, from the cultivation of flax fibre to its processing in the various steps, ranges from the Neolithic Age, in its technical-economic unfold, to the latest collections. It stands to reason that all contributes to an illuminating interpretation of historical traces which are permeated of mystery. The historical photographic documents are particularly amazing, some of them unpublished and hardly traceable in this form like “the Holy Shroud”, the “Liber Linteus Zagrabiensis » (the longest Etruscan text and the only extant linen book Ph.5) and the “Tabula Peutingeriana » (a roman itinerary map).
