Kelly Slater, the most successful surfer on the planet (11 crowns) blew his 46th birthday on February 11th. He will leave the world tour in 2019, at the end of a season as wildcard.

Linen blend denim

 

Wellthread sustainable initiative by Levi’s, a first linen blend denim (58 % cotton 42% linen) was developped for caspule collab with Outerknown. A jacket and a 511 jeans in chalk colour (note : a similar indigo model exists but 100% cotton).

The innovation offers significant water savings thanks to:

– the choice of flax/linen :”Instead of irrigating the flax plant that becomes linen, the crop was entirely rain fed—leading to nearly 1000 liters of water savings per jeans during this part of the lifecycle.” Third-party verification was performed under the European Flax® traceability standard.

– responsible processes : “Our whitecaps colorway is constructed out of undyed fabric, to highlight natural color and variation while saving water.” Levi’s Water<less™ finishing saves up to 12 liters per jeans, or in total more than 1 billion liters since its launch in 2011.

 

In order to calculate the water savings resulting from integrating linen into the denim, Levi’s engaged their supply chain into traceability verifications through Bureau Veritas according to the European Flax® standard. They were thus able to assess that 100% of the flax fibre used is from European sustainable flax crops, and to incorporate the data of the flax LifeCycle Assessment (LCA) regarding flax cultivation and transformation impacts (Source – Bio Intelligence Service for CELC 2008).
